1. What is a Nation-State?
A nation-state is a political unit where:
- The people share a common identity (language, culture, history)
- The state has a defined territory and government
- Citizens feel loyalty to the nation, not to a king or dynasty
Before the 19th century, most of Europe was ruled by multi-ethnic empires (Habsburg, Ottoman, Russian) where people spoke different languages, followed different religions, and had no single national identity.
2. The French Revolution and Nationalism
The French Revolution (1789) was the birthplace of modern nationalism.
What changed:
- Sovereignty moved from the monarch to the people (citizens)
- The idea of Patrie (Fatherland) — loyalty to the nation
- A new French flag — the tricolour
- The National Assembly replaced the old estates
- French became the official language of the nation
Napoleon’s role:
Napoleon Bonaparte spread nationalist ideas across Europe through conquest:
- Introduced the Napoleonic Code (civil equality, abolition of privileges)
- Simplified legal systems
- But also imposed French rule — triggering nationalist reactions in conquered territories
📌 Board Exam Note: The paradox — Napoleon exported revolutionary ideas but also undermined local sovereignty. Be ready to explain both sides.
3. The Romantic Imagination (Romanticism)
Romanticism was a cultural movement that helped build national identity through:
- Folklore and folk songs — collecting and celebrating local traditions (e.g., Brothers Grimm in Germany)
- Art and music — capturing the emotional essence of the nation
- Language — emphasising the native language over Latin (Romantic poets used vernacular languages)
Key figures:
| Person | Contribution |
|---|---|
| Brothers Grimm | Collected German folk tales — created national cultural identity |
| Johann Gottfried Herder | Said “true German spirit” lived in folk songs and peasant culture |
| Frederic Chopin | Used Polish folk tunes to express Polish nationalism through music |
| Karel Havlíček | Used vernacular Czech to build Czech national identity |
4. The Age of Revolutions (1830–1848)
1830: Revolutions sweep Europe
- France: A second revolution against the conservative Bourbon monarchy
- Belgium: Broke away from the Netherlands and achieved independence
- Greece: Achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1832 (first nationalist movement to succeed)
1848: The Year of Revolutions — “Springtime of Nations”
The 1848 revolutions were the biggest wave of nationalist uprisings across Europe:
- France: Second Republic declared
- German states: Frankfurt Parliament met to discuss German unification
- Austria-Hungary, Italy, Poland: Uprisings against imperial rule
Why 1848 matters: These revolutions failed militarily but proved that nationalist movements couldn’t be permanently suppressed.
5. Unification of Germany (Bismarck’s Blood and Iron)
Germany before 1866 was 39 separate states in a loose German Confederation.
Otto von Bismarck’s strategy: “Blood and Iron”
- He believed Germany could only be unified through war and diplomacy, not speeches
- Three wars in 7 years:
| War | Year | Result |
|---|---|---|
| War against Denmark | 1864 | Prussia gained Schleswig |
| Austro-Prussian War | 1866 | Prussia dominant in North Germany |
| Franco-Prussian War | 1870–71 | France defeated; South German states join |
- January 1871: German Empire proclaimed at Versailles
- Kaiser (Emperor): Wilhelm I of Prussia
- Chancellor: Bismarck
📌 5-mark question: Describe the role of Bismarck in the unification of Germany.
6. Unification of Italy (Cavour and Garibaldi)
Italy before 1870 was divided into:
- Kingdom of Sardinia (North)
- Papal States (Centre, under the Pope)
- Kingdom of Naples (South)
- Austrian-controlled regions
Three key figures:
| Figure | Role |
|---|---|
| Count Cavour (Prime Minister of Sardinia) | Diplomatic mastermind — allied with France against Austria |
| Giuseppe Garibaldi | Military leader — led the Red Shirts (1860) — conquered South Italy |
| Victor Emmanuel II | First King of united Italy (1861) |
1870: Rome captured from the Pope → Italy completely unified.
7. Visualising the Nation
Nationalism wasn’t just political — artists painted the nation as a female figure:
| Figure | What She Represents |
|---|---|
| Marianne (France) | Liberty — wears red cap, holds torch |
| Germania (Germany) | German nation — holds sword, wears oak leaves (strength) |
| Bharat Mata (India, later) | The Indian nation as mother |
These images appeared on coins, stamps, and public places — making abstract nationalism visible and emotional.
